Jonathan Richman - Mars in Furs

I knew I loved you the first time
I held your hand
Before the Jonathan Richman show
at the Middle East Upstairs
(That’s the name of a local club)

Last time I’d been there
it was to see some satanic black metal band
(Guilty pleasure)

What a contrast this was to hold you close like
we were the only people there

And Jonathan Richman sang,
“Lovers, they don’t need to sleep,”
and we knew that he was singing
about you and me

Before the show we ran
hand in hand through the parking lot
Got in your car and played some Britney
while we took turns doing vodka shots
(That’s illegal)

On the way back, I scribbled out names in sharpie
on the walls of the parking garage
with a plus sign in between but not a heart
so I wouldn’t seem too overly enthused

And Jonathan Richman sang,
“Loves, they don’t need to sleep”
and we knew that he was singing
about you and me
(and he was)

When the show was through
I walked up to the stage with you
And Jonathan shook my hand, and you shook it
and you even kissed it too

I mumbled something about how awesome he was,
and how I love him,
and he smiled, all right
He smiled warmly

What I should have said is that he’s the reason we met
and fell in love that night,
god damn, god damn
Hind sight

And Jonathan Richman sang,
“You know it’s gonna be all right,”
and we knew that he was talking
about our lives
about our lives
